ABOUT LEAD-BASED PAINT

Lead is a naturally occurring element found in small amounts in the earth’s crust.

Young children are especially vulnerable to lead as it's a highly toxic metal that may cause a range of health problems causing damage to the brain and other vital organs, like the kidneys, nerves, and blood. Children who have been poisoned by lead may show no symptoms.

Exposure to lead has also been known to cause behavioral problems, learning disabilities, seizures, and in extreme cases, death. Leading symptoms of lead poisoning may include headaches, stomachaches, nausea, tiredness, and irritability. Outside the home, deteriorated lead paint can mix with household dust and soil and become tracked into the home.

High levels of lead may also cause seizures, coma, and death in both children and adults. It's common for the symptoms of lead poisoning to look like other health conditions or problems.

There is no such thing as a safe blood lead level, and even with treatment, people may suffer from long-lasting physical and behavioral problems.

If your home was built before 1978, you can take some safety precautions such as:

  • Wipe down any flat surfaces, such as window sills, with damp paper towels and throw away the paper towel
  • Mop smooth floors weekly to control dust (using a damp mop)
  • Removing your shoes when entering the house
  • Removing dust by vacuuming carpets and upholstery and use a vacuum with a HEPA filter or a "higher efficiency" collection bag when possible
  • Very carefully, pick up any loose paint chips with a paper towel and discard them in the trash, then wipe the surface clean with a wet paper towel
  • When remodeling, renovating or maintaining your home, take precautions to avoid creating lead dust
  • Get your home tested for lead hazards by a lead professional. (Have the soil tested too).

Where is Lead often found?

Lead can be found in all parts of our environment – the air, the soil, the water, and even inside our homes. Most lead exposure comes from human activities including the use of fossil fuels (including past use of leaded gasoline), some types of industrial facilities and past use of lead-based paint in homes.

  • A house built before 1950,
  • A house built before 1978 with ongoing or recent renovations or remodeling
  • Home remedies (such as azarcon, greta, pay-loo-ah, or litargirio) and cosmetics (such as kohl or alkohl) that contain lead
  • Candies, such as tamarindo candy jam products from other countries that may contain high levels of lead in the wrapper or stick. Be very cautious when providing imported candies to children
  • Some types of tableware, particularly folk terra cotta plates and bowls from Latin America that may contain high levels of lead that can leach into food.
